Asthma Doctor

Asthma can affect young and old. While most of the time it is not serious, no one likes to be coughing much of the time. Diagnosis and asthma treatment can be given at the Silver Star Urgent Care center to bring it under control so that there is a better quality of life. Emergencies also occur, and our expert doctors are ready to help provide relief.

Testing for Asthma

Several tests are available at the Silver Star Urgent Care center to diagnose asthma, if you have not yet been diagnosed. A physical exam will be given first to rule out other possible causes.

Tests are likely to include the use of two instruments: spirometry and peak flow. These devices measure how much air you can exhale (spirometry) and peak flow measures how hard you are able to exhale. People with asthma use a peak flow gauge to determine when their asthma symptoms are getting worse.

Allergy Testing

After a diagnosis has been given, the patient may need to have allergy testing. This helps to determine what agents can trigger an asthma attack. There are many possible triggers, and knowing what they are can help the individual to be able to avoid them for greater control.

Prevention Is the Goal

Once an individual has been diagnosed with asthma, a treatment plan can be personalized. This will vary with each individual, and some testing will be necessary. The primary goal of the medications will be to prevent asthma attacks which will require emergency visits.

Medications

Normally, asthma treatment include two types of medications to be able to control their asthma symptoms. One medication is given for daily maintenance, and the other one is usually an inhaler. The inhaler is to be used when there are symptoms that breathing starts to become worse, so that it may prevent it from becoming a full-blown asthma attack.

Common Asthma Triggers

Different people are going to be affected by different things. This is why testing is necessary, but the individual may already be aware of a few triggers. Other common triggers include air pollution, smoke, chemical fumes, pollen, dust mites, animal dander, extreme weather, molds, exercise, and stress.

Knowing when there are increased levels of triggers in an area can help him or her be better prepared. Some days, for instance, when there is an increased level of pollen or air pollution, a mask might need to be worn if they are going to be outdoors.

Better Quality of Life

Once asthma is under control and the medications have been adjusted, the individual should be able to live a much more normal life. You should also be able to be active, but it will be necessary to carry medication with you at all times.

The Silver Star Urgent Care center has Board-certified doctors who can provide asthma treatment and testing. Many tips for successful asthma management can also be provided to enable a better life with asthma.
