When you have asthma and bronchitis symptoms, you may need to get treatment fast. Going to an emergency room at a hospital is not likely going to get you treated quickly. Instead, you are apt to sit around in a room with other sick people for hours. A good solution would be to go to an urgent care center.

About Asthma

Bronchitis and asthma are similar in some ways, but the causes are different. Asthma will usually result in three common symptoms, including shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing. The breathing rate will also usually increase because of a limited amount of air getting to the lungs with each breath.

Asthma symptoms may vary between asthma attacks. In most cases, once the asthma is diagnosed, the patient will be given two types of medications: one for daily maintenance, and one for asthma attacks. A severe asthma attack may lead to hospitalization.

The key to successful treatment of asthma is to understand the triggers and avoid them. Triggers may include allergens, pollen, exposure to chemicals, illnesses, and some medications.

About Bronchitis

Bronchitis is caused by an inflammation in your airways, which limits the amount of air your lungs can get. The symptoms you will have may include coughing up phlegm, wheezing, fatigue, pain in the chest, a slight fever, and shortness of breath. The coughing is likely to last for a minimum of five days, but it may last for as long as three weeks. Most people with bronchitis do not need treatment because it will often clear up on its own, but people may want some relief by using over-the-counter medications.

When Asthma Combines with Bronchitis

Patients can get both asthma and bronchitis at the same time. It will make their symptoms much worse. People who have both are going to be treated with inhalers, painkillers that are over-the-counter, and oral steroids.

Getting Tested

In order to get a proper diagnosis of asthma, some tests will be necessary. Generally, these tests include spirometry, peak airflow, and may include imaging and allergy tests. The doctor may also look for other conditions.
