Problems with the skin affect many people every year, particularly in the warmer months. There are many causes, and professional medical treatment is necessary for some of them. While some of them are mild, some bites, rashes, skin conditions, can lead to serious health complications.

Types of Problems

The following categories of bites, rashes, skin conditions and similar problems need to be considered on an individual basis. There are many possibilities in each.

Bites

Many animals can and will bite. Medical treatment should always follow an animal bite. This especially includes wild animals such as raccoons, coyotes, opossums, rats, porcupines, and more. Animals, even some dogs can carry rabies and other diseases.

Many bug bites are not serious and do not require medical attention. Certain types will require going to a doctor for treatment. This will include spiders, fleas, bedbugs, and ticks especially, but mosquito bites in some geographic areas may also be a concern.

Ticks especially need medical care – particularly if you know that a tick-borne disease is in the area. Researchers are now saying that Lyme disease could spread in just 10 minutes.

Rashes

Rashes can be caused by many things, ranging from viruses and bacteria to insect bites, or even from reactions to chemicals and allergies. A rash that lasts for some time, or has particular a shape, should be looked at by a doctor. Rashes that occur all over large portions of the body should also be looked at. This may include measles, chicken pox, shingles, scarlet fever, poison ivy, and more.

Medical doctors should be seen when rashes are accompanied by other health problems. These may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or limbs, a fever of more than 104.4, severe pain in the head or neck, dizziness, confusion, or repeated vomiting or diarrhea. If there has been a recent insect bite, you should also see the doctor.

Skin Conditions

Problems with your skin can have many sources of irritations. You can have fungal infections, itching, scabies, eczema, psoriasis, impetigo, ringworm, hives, and many more problems. Some skin problems do not last long, but others will need ongoing specialized treatment.

Some skin conditions can be very serious and need medical attention right away. These include melanomas, lupus, cellulitis, and a latex allergy. Skin conditions are caused by many problems, including viruses, bacteria, fungus, parasites, allergens, genetics, illnesses, and a weakened immune system. Some of the conditions may also be caused by the sun, pregnancy, stress, diabetes, and more.

Diagnosis

Patients will need to present themselves to the doctor so that an examination may be given. Various tests will likely need to be made.
