Ingrown toenails can prevent you from doing a lot of things. Of course, there is also the pain factor. You may have put up with it long enough, but now it is time to get treatment for it. Most likely, the place where you can get the fastest treatment from medical professionals is from an urgent care center.

About the Condition

Toenails that have grown in means that the edges of one or more has curved more than normal and it is now growing into your toe at one or more of the edges. This usually occurs with the nail of the big toe, and it results in redness, pain, and swelling. If the nail breaks the skin, it can lead to inflammation and infection.

The condition is rather common in athletes because of more perspiration in the foot which makes the nails soft and more easily bendable. The skin is also softer under these conditions. It is often caused by not having the right shoes, or from an injury to the toe. The condition can be recurring, but treatment may help remedy it.

Complications

If you have other health problems, such as diabetes, you need to ensure that it is properly cared for. This disease normally causes a slower blood flow in your extremities which can make it more difficult to cure an infection.

Another problem that can occur with ingrown toenails is that if the infection is not treated, the infection could spread into the bone. This will be even more painful and will require antibiotics and possibly surgery.

When to See a Doctor

It is time to see a doctor when you notice that the redness or infection is spreading. If you have diabetes and have an ingrown toenail, and there is an infection, you should see a doctor and be sure to tell the doctor that you have diabetes.
