When you have urinary tract infections (UTIs), and the pain is serious enough to want quick treatment, you do not want to sit in a waiting room for a long time. You want a fast diagnosis from a doctor who cares and then can give you the treatment you need. You can get the quick treatment you want at a nearby urgent care clinic.

About UTIs

Women have the highest risk of getting a urinary tract infection, but men can get them, too. Also, they are not limited to any specific age group – infants and seniors can get them, as well. Symptoms are not always present, but when they are, it can be rather painful.

The most common form of this type of infection is between the bladder and the urethra. This more mild form is rather easily treated with antibiotics. The symptoms may include:

  • Discomfort in the lower abdomen
  • Pressure in the pelvic region
  • Frequent urination with pain
  • Blood in the urine.

While most urinary tract infections are usually not that serious, it can become serious if it spreads beyond the bladder and the kidneys become infected. When that happens, the symptoms become much worse. They may include:

  • A high fever with chills
  • Pain in the upper back and side
  • Nausea and vomiting.

If treatment is not obtained when the UTI reaches the kidney, this could result in serious complications. They may include recurring infections, low birth weight babies, permanent kidney damage and possibly sepsis – which could be life-threatening.

Preventing UTIs

Many times a UTI can be prevented simply by taking some preventive steps. One of the most important steps would be to drink lots of water, which will help to flush the bacteria from your urinary tract before the bacteria starts to multiply. Drinking cranberry juice may help. After a bowel movement, be sure to wipe from front to back to avoid spreading bacteria to the vagina and urethra. You may also want to get a new birth control method if you are using diaphragms, or spermicide-treated or unlubricated condoms.
